Meeting the challenge of change through training
|
Mandate:
|
Assisting with revisions of existing standards, codes and safety
regulations for the “Overhead Lifting Equipment Industry” in Canada and the United
States. To set the industry minimum standard for delivery of safety training by
having independent third party audits of ACTi training material content, to ensure
compliance to all national and international recognized standards and codes.

Judy Mellott – President of ACTi
Judy has 20 years experience in the crane industry by starting as a partner in a
successful overhead crane inspection and maintenance company. Judy is responsible for
forming three industry committees, chairperson for two, which resulted in as two
“Industry Best Practices” being published by WHSA (OH&S) including two revisions.
These practices are still current and are the industry minimum requirement in Alberta.
Presently Judy is an active member on the CSA B167 committee, revising existing standards
to be in compliance to the ISO International World Standards for cranes and also a
participating committee member on the ASME B30 Series for cranes in the United States.
Judy has participated as a Task Force member on the NCCCO (National Commission for
Certification of Crane Operators) certification program for overhead crane operators
and as direct result of my effort they changed the certification requirement to be
applicable all overhead lifting equipment five ton and over. ACTi is leading the
industry by developing and documenting all of our training programs material
content to be standardized, in accordance and compliant to all applicable
national and international standards which is annually audited and verified by an industry
expert professional engineer. It is our mandate to set the industry minimum acceptable
standard for safety training in North America.
Judy is a co-author of “KOLO’S Hoisting & Rigging Handbook”, which is the first
of it’s kind in North America to be engineer audited and verified compliant to all
national and international applicable recognized standards.
Judy also has over 30 years of business experience, which include management skills and
sales experience from her previous ownership in a profitable overhead crane, parts
and service company.
Her crane industry experience began with managing the operation of their overhead
crane service company for nearly a decade. ACTi was founded to fill a growing need
for Overhead Crane and Mobile Crane Safety Training Programs.
Judy’s personal agenda is to aid and assist industry to make it safer for all concerned.
She chaired an industry committee which created the document – Overhead Cranes
Guideline for the “Preventative Maintenance and Safe Operation of Overhead Lifting
Equipment”. This document was presented to Alberta Workplace Health
and Safety, accepted and published for industry’s use. She continued with her personal
agenda and chaired a second industry committee, this one to develop a “Safety
Guideline for Training Overhead Crane Operators and Supervisors”. Several
large companies and interested parties joined Judy in this project and upon its
completion it was also presented to AWHS, accepted and published for industry’s
use.
Judy was instrumental in forming another Alberta industry committee, to develop
a minimum training requirement for overhead crane operators. The committee was made
up of 50 of the most highly recognized and respected members, representing associations,
unions, manufacturers, engineers, training providers and end users. The “Guideline
for Safety Training of Overhead Crane Operators and Supervisors” document
was presented to AWHS, accepted and published for industry’s use.
2005 – CSA B167-96 is the Canadian maintenance standard for overhead lifting
equipment. This standard is currently being revised to be in compliance to all applicable
recognized Canadian and International standards. ACTi has been invited to participate
on this committee. It is expected to have the revision completed in the early part
of 2005.
2003-2004 – The NCCCO (National Commission for Certification of Crane Operators)
together with the CMAA (Crane Manufacturer’s Association of America), IUOE (International
Union of Operating Engineers) and industry, formed a national task force to document
a “Certification Examination Program for Overhead Crane Operators”. It is
now an “Industry Recommended Practice” for those operators who operate lifting
equipment five ton and over to take the NCCCO certification exam for Overhead Crane
Operators. ACTi was the only Canadian Company that was personally invited to participate
on this committee.
2002 – The “Alberta Women’s Enterprise Initiative Association” recommended
ACTi for the Premier’s “Business award of the Year” for a company of distinction
for “Safety in the Workplace”
